School district begins using unserved cafeteria food for weekend meals

Elkhart Community Schools has partnered with a nonprofit to turn leftover food into frozen meals students can eat over the weekend.

Elkhart Community Schools in Elkhart, Ind., has partnered with a nonprofit to turn unserved cafeteria food into weekend meals for students, News 3 reports. 

The district worked with Cultivate to start a pilot program that will give 20 students in the district a backpack full of frozen meals made from excess food from the cafeteria for them to eat over the weekend.

The pilot will run for the rest of the school year.
