San Francisco City Schools has secured a change in the sweetener used by its primary milk supplier in its nonfat chocolate milk product, reports the San Francisco Chronicle. The district had asked Berkeley Farms, a local division of dairy giant Dean Foods, to use plain sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup to sweeten the product. The two sweeteners have the same nutritional profile, including the same calorie content, but some parents were concerned about high fructose corn syrup because they consider it an “artificial” product, unlike sugar. Berkeley Farms supplies some 12,000 half-pint cartons of the chocolate milk to the San Francisco district each day.
