Oct. 14—The recent arrest of a veteran accountant in the Nutrition Services Department at the Rialto Unified School District on suspicion of embezzling funds has raised questions about the system of checks and balances meant to guard against such fraud in school cafeterias.

In Rialto Unified, former accountant Judith Oakes is charged with embezzling $1.8 million from the district’s Nutritional Services Department, despite internal safeguards.

She pleaded not guilty last week.
