The foodservice director for the York and Kittery, ME, school districts who spoke up for keeping potatoes as part of the National School Lunch Program at the National Press Club last fall, is leaving her post to finish her dietetic technician degree, reports the Portsmouth (NH) Sea Coast. Doris Demers was named FSD for the York schools in 2003 and took on nearby Kittery as well four years later. Her tenure at both districts has been marked by increased use of local products, including potatoes from a field planted especially for the two districts by a local farmer.
