The Philadelphia School District has converted 10 of its cafeteria sites back to full service onsite meal prep in an attempt to increase appeal to students, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer. The district had closed dozens of full-service cafeterias in recent years, including 26 at the end of the 2010-11 school year in a move that officials said saved $2.3 million, and switching to pre-plated meals trucked in from a central kitchen in Brooklyn. Of the district's roughly 280 meal sites, about 200 now receive the satellited meals. The 10 cafeterias reopened this year were deemed cost-neutral because they are located in newer buildings that didn't need to add new equipment.
