In an effort to increase school meal participation, West Virginia-based George Washington High School recently had students sample potential menu items, reports wowktv.com.

Students taste-tested steamed broccoli, egg rolls and orange and teriyaki chicken with fried rice.

Officials say they will use students’ feedback to determine whether to add the items to the menu. Currently, the school’s lunch participation averages just 23 percent daily, says the district’s director of child nutrition, Diane Miller. About 20 percent more students sampled the new items.

“The students are showing [enthusiasm] to me and telling me about their taste preferences and can we do this, can we do that,” Miller told the website. “Absolutely, I'm going to meet with them, I'm going to talk with them about their opinions and what kind of different items they'd like to see in our menus.”
