Hawaii balks at school gardens as produce source

For many reasons, school cafeterias can't yet use food grown in school gardens.

Schools on the Hawaiian island of Maui are using a garden project to teach children about where their food comes from. But so far school administrators have had to draw the line at actually bringing food from the gardens into school cafeterias. Several reasons for the ban have been cited, but school garden advocates hope that legislation currently before state lawmakers will be able to change that.
