Grand Rapids (MI) Schools plans to use an $800,000 surplus in its foodservice budget to provide free meals to students eligible for reduced-price lunches and breakfasts. In Grand Rapids, 72 percent of the district’s 21,000 students are eligible for free meals, and 6 percent for reduced price meals. The goal is to increase participation among reduced-price-elibgile students, which currently stands at 59%. By contrast, 74% of those eligible for free meals participate.
