Florida bill would require state schools to prioritize local food

A bill has been introduced in Florida that would require state colleges and other entities to prioritize purchasing food that is grown or produced in the state. 

Under SB 1164, state universities, Florida college institutions, contracted foodservice providers and other state entities would be required to prioritize commodities grown or processed locally whenever it is available, practical and feasible. 

If passed, schools would have to start giving preference to local commodities by 2025 or when their existing foodservice contracts expire, whichever comes first. 

The bill is currently in the Appropriations Committee on Agriculture, Environment and General Government. A companion bill has also been introduced in the House.
