District expands halal school lunches

Halal lunches will now be served at five elementary schools in the San Diego Unified School District.

As school districts have become more diverse, tailoring meals to different cultures has become as important as making them healthy.

The San Diego Unified School District has expanded its halal school lunch program, which meets guidelines for Muslim students, to five elementary schools, reports local news outlet KBPS.

Officials say the meals will be served once a week along with traditional cafeteria foods, and that although the halal meals are slightly more expensive, the higher number of students eating in cafeterias offsets the cost.
