District adds new farm-to-school program

Columbia Public Schools in Columbia, Mo., is starting a farm-to-school program this fall, KOMU reports.

Next school year, around 1,000 students will be able to participate in 17 different food and agricultural activities as part of the program, including school gardening, chef demonstrations, tastings and visits to a local farm.

The program is meant to build upon the school’s existing farm-to-school initiative and was created by a partnership between the district, Columbia Center for Urban Agriculture, Heart of Missouri United Way and the Boone County Children's Service Fund.

The program will begin at seven of the district’s elementary schools, which were chosen because more than half of their students are eligible for free or reduced-price meals.
