Dearborn (MI) Public Schools is serving dishes at some of its school sites that include proteins that meet halal standards required by observant Muslims, reports the Press & Guide. The district says the special meals are served at schools where there is a request from the principal following demands from parents. The meals cost the district 20 to 25 percent more than regular meals. About half of the 1.7 million meals served in Dearborn schools each year are served at schools that have requested halal meals.
