The 2020 FAME (Foodservice Achievement Management Excellence Awards) winners have been announced, with Mark Bordeau, senior foodservice director for the Broome-Tioga Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) in New York, receiving the Golden School Foodservice Director of the Year Award.

Bordeau has been with the BOCES for nearly two decades, during which time he’s turned the program from one composing of two districts to 15 with a combined buying power of $18 million. In 2006, he created the Rock on Café, a marketing program to promote fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and low-fat or fat-free milk.

Bordeau has also been a farm-to-school advocate, and was recently selected to participate in LEAD NY, a prestigious program composed of growers, lenders, shippers, retailers, educators and consultants to help learn ways to improve the food, agriculture and natural resources industries.

Working in a community with a high free and reduced percentage has led Bordeau to tackle food insecurity as well. Last summer he launched a lunch box program for families in need, obtaining $50,000 in funds to operate the program. Bordeau was also a founding member of the Broome County Child Hunger Task Force.

Bordeau is also the current president of the New York branch of the School Nutrition Association (SNA).

Other 2020 FAME award winners are:

  • Silver Leadership Award: Aaron Wylie, director of child nutrition, Eagle Mountain-Saginaw Independent School District, Fort Worth, Texas;

  • Silver Spirit Award: Shonia Hall, associate director school nutrition services, Oklahoma Public Schools, Oklahoma City; and

  • Silver Rising Star Award: Kathlyn Walter, school nutrition program supervisor, Putnam County Schools, Cookeville, Tenn.

The winners will be honored at SNA School Nutrition Industry Conference in Indian Wells, Calif., Jan. 12. FAME awards were voted by previous winners and industry members, including Food Management. The FAME awards are sponsored by Basic American Foods.
