Bethlehem Area School District in Bethlehem, Pa., is using debt collectors to alleviate its student meal debt, The Morning Call reports.

The district ended last school year with a negative balance of $154,590 and more than 3,370 student accounts owing lunch money.

In response, the district announced it would be working with a debt collection agency to contact families who have a negative balance of $50 or more and have not made any attempt to pay back the debt.

Officials say the increase in meal debt is due to a law banning lunch shaming in the state that was passed late last year.
