UAB Hospital recently became one of the country's largest hospitals to adopt a room service style patient dining approach. The 900-bed facility, located on the campus of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, launched the room service initiative on the week of October 19th, reports the Birmingham News. Administrators anticipate savings of as much as $250,000 annually because of food waste reductions.

The new approach replaces a traditional paper slip-based day-in-advance preorder system that offered limited options with a single bedside menu that lists dozens of options—there are 18 desserts alone—and a phone order protocol that promises delivery in 45 minutes. Hours of operation are 6:30 am to 7 pm.
