Hospital staff at Sentara Princess Anne Hospital in Virginia Beach have a new place to relax during night shifts.

Nautically named Breakaway Bay, the 24-hour space allows nurses and clinical support staff to unwind and grab a bite to eat during breaks when the cafeteria is closed.

The idea for the lounge came from staff, who requested a place where they could recharge during the evening and early morning hours.

“We’re doing this because the night shift asked for it,” said Sentara Princess Anne Hospital President Dana Weston Graves at a nighttime ribbon cutting where staff were invited. “The QR code survey, the employee engagement survey, the leader rounding comments all asked for access to food at night, and so, here we are.”

Staff scan their badges to access the space which is filled with a variety of sandwiches, wraps, salads and snacks as well as coffee, water and tea.

Breakaway Bay was created in collaboration between Compass One Healthcare and foodservice provider Morrison Healthcare.
