Lewis County (NY) General Hospital provided Meals on Wheels service to 120 local residents for a two-week period while the contract was between providers in January. The contract with the previous provider had expired at the end of 2006, and the new one couldn’t start for several weeks, so the county turned to the hospital to bridge the gap. Lewis County Hospital, which generally is at capacity just to provide meals for the 200 patients and staff generally onsite, hired two extra employees for the period and used its existing menu, simply expanding the amount produced to cover the extra meals. The local office for the aging picked up and delivered the meals.
