UM Medical Center (UMMC), the main university hospital for the University of Minnesota Medical School, sits on the two banks of the Mississippi River southeast of downtown Minneapolis. The East Bank campus, which sits adjacent to the UM Twin Cities campus, was the original university medical center, while the West Bank campus, formerly Saint Mary’s Hospital and Fairview-Riverside Medical Center, were integrated into the current organization following a merger in 1997.
UMMC is participating in the Hospital Healthier Food Initiative of the Partnership for a Healthier America in which it pledges the removal of deep-fried foods and commits to offering a high percentage of healthier items to patients, customers and employees. The hospital uses mostly a room service model for its patient dining with the exception of tray service to some behavioral units in the West Bank campus.
The hospital’s main cafeteria operates from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekends serving a wide assortment of meal choices from grilled items to sandwiches to salads and desserts.
