MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn, Ill., has launched the Surplus Project to package leftover uneaten food from the hospital’s foodservice program and donate it to those in need

Every Tuesday and Thursday morning, volunteers pack individual meals and desserts along with beverages, fruit, vegetables and other available items. Once packed, the meals are then delivered to a local social service organization.

The volunteers pack approximately 150 meals a week.
