2015 Hospital Power Players: Methodology & Notes

Methodology
The Hospital Power Players is a comprehensive report generated by exclusive research done by FM editors in collaboration with Technomic. The report provides a detailed look into both patient and retail foodservice operations at the 50 largest hospitals. The hospitals are ranked by the number of licensed beds in 2014, per data compiled by Technomic Inc.’s Digital Resources Library, which uses the Provider of Services file of the government’s Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services as the reference point. The Provider of Services data is supplied by each institution and varies in how many individual facilities it covers. Some report as single facilities or campuses while others co-report with other facilities that are not on the same campus or geographical site.

Sites with multiple co-reporting facilities are noted below.
Also of note, the Provider of Services file cited here reports Total Beds regardless of staffed or licensed status, which is different from other sources that cite Staffed Beds only, excluding beds utilized for only a portion of patient stays such as labor and delivery, post-operative, special procedures, etc.
