April 5—The foodservice programs at the Naval Air Station in Oceana, Va., and the U.S Naval Base at Kitsap, Wash. were among seven on-base and shipboard operations chosen as best in the Navy for 2013 by the Capt. Edward F. Ney Memorial Awards committee. Oceana earned its award in the Large General Mess category, and Kitsap won in the Small General Mess group.

The committee, made up of members of the U.S. Navy and the International Food Service Executives Association, also presented awards in five "afloat" categories. The Ney Awards, which honor the memory of Capt. Edward Ney, who served as head of the Subsistence Division for the Navy's Bureau of Supplies and Accounts during World War II, have been presented since 1958.
