HIRED: JOIE SCHOONOVER, as director of dining and culinary services at the 42,000-student University of Wisconsin in Madison. In her new role, Schoonover will oversee the execution of a long-range master plan, which includes building new facilities and reorganizing the program’s infrastructure. Schoonover comes to Madison from the University of Wisconsin in Platteville, where she served as director of dining services. She was associate director at Platteville prior to her promotion in June 2008. She has also worked in dining services positions at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, the University of Missouri in Columbia and Knox College in Galesburg, Ill. Schoonover holds a degree in restaurant, hotel and institutional management from Purdue University.

HIRED: TODD LINDSAY, as director of business and sales development for Fitz, Vogt and Associates. Lindsay will be responsible for business development for all non-commercial segments in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. Lindsay previously served as a senior area manager for Guckenheimer Enterprises, vice president of sales for Sodexo and as one of the original employees at Gardner Merchant/ Trusthouse Forte Food Services. Lindsay holds a BS in hospitality management from the University of New Haven in Connecticut. He also completed an advanced management program at the Management Institute in Paris, which was a program funded by Sodexo.

RESIGNED: DAVID BERKOWITZ, as executive director of SchoolFood for the New York City Public Schools. According to Margie Feinberg, spokeswoman for the department of education, Berkowitz “has gone on to other ventures.” Feinberg says she did not know the reason for Berkowitz’s departure or his plans following his departure. Dianne Frankel, chief of operations, is handling many of SchoolFood’s responsibilities, according to Feinberg. No replacement for Berkowitz has been named. Berkowitz joined the district in 2003. Berkowitz was instrumental in bringing in Chef Jorge Collazo who had standardized recipes and increased variety for the 1,200 public schools, as well as 300 parochial and charter schools in the city.

HIRED: CHRIS MUNKEL, as Sodexo’s director of operations for dining services at 12,700-student Emory University in Atlanta. Munkel had been general manager at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville since 2005, where he had taken over for his father, Mike Munkel. Previously Munkel served as regional executive chef for Sodexo’s Southeast region, as well as executive chef at Georgia Tech., Georgia State University, Kennesaw State University, all in Atlanta, and Carthage College in Kenosha, Wis. He holds a degree from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y.
