Lunch debt may cause charges to be banned

April 23—Wiggins (Colo.) School District students may not be able to charge their lunches any more, depending on how the district resolves money owed to the food service program.

Parents owe a total of about $2,000 in unpaid lunch charges, said Food Service Director Wendy Blake. While Blake has sent out letters asking parents to pay their bills, that strategy has not been very effective, she said.

In the past, the board of education has said it does not want children to be hungry, but there does not seem to be a way to get these parents to pay, said Superintendent Steve Neel. Neel said he did not know what else to do short of cutting off charges.
