Louisville (Ky.) helps FSDs go local

Aug. 25—Louisville Farm to Table, a government-affiliated service that connects farmers and consumers, is partnering with Aramark and Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s Healthcare for the first of several seminars to help hospital and school foodservice managers add more local foods to their menus.

The first event, which will be held on Aug. 26, is called Healthy Foods for Healthy Living. The education program includes a presentation by Jamie Harvey, a founder of the sustainability program Health Care Without Harm.

The organizers say the event also will be a networking opportunity for foodservice providers to learn how peers are using local foods.

In October, Farm to Table is hosting a seminar called Breaking Down Barriers: Putting Farm to School Into Practice. Keynoter Doug Davis, director of food service for the Burlington (Vt.) School District, will offer advice on how to find and purchase local foods for student-feeding facilities.

Farm to Table was created to help local farmers connect with potential purchasers of their crops.
