OKEMOS, Mich.—Joesph Spina, executive director of the National Association of College & University Food Services (NACUFS), announced his retirement, effective December 31, 2012. Spina made the announcement during the 2011 NACUFS National Conference in Grapevine, Texas.

Spina joined the association in 1990 and is NACUFS’ second executive director. In 1997, he was recognized by NACUFS for his service to the association with the Richard Lichtenfelt Award. Before joining NACUFS, Spina was director of communications with the Foodservice & Packaging Institute in Washington, D.C. He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Temple University and a doctorate of philosophy from Rutgers University.

“Without a doubt, Joe is leaving some big shoes to fill,” Nona Golledge, NACUFS president and director of KU dining services at the University of Kansas, said in a press release. “His leadership has been instrumental in the tremendous growth and success of the association. He will be missed.”

NACUFS plans to form a project team in the fall to begin the search for a new executive director.
