District expands spring break meal service

Dallas Independent School District is expanding its number of schools that will serve breakfast and lunch over spring break, growing that amount from six to 27, WFAA reports.

Along with giving students access to meals, school officials also say that the program benefits students because it gives them a schedule to follow. The district began serving meals over the school break as part of a pilot program last year.

“When you’re in your early teens, a lot of kids don’t know how to structure the time and don’t do well when they don’t have a routine,” school counselor Matt Bentley told WFAA. "They may not say it out loud, but it’s really something they crave and they need.”

School officials estimate that, with the expansion, serving meals over those five days will cost $10,000 in additional labor. They hope to expand spring break service even further in future years.
