Helena Public Schools in Helena, Mont., is aiming to increase its number of free and reduced-price meal applicants through a proposed income eligibility campaign, KTVH reports.

The proposed campaign was created through a partnership between the district’s foodservice vendor, Sodexo, and the Kids Hunger Coalition.

“We’re really trying to take a compassionate and collaborative effort with families to work out any issues with them and make sure all kids get fed every day,” the district’s school board chair told KTVH.

Officials say one way the campaign would encourage more applicants is by having principals reach out to families with overdue lunch balances to privately discuss their options for meal assistance.
