An investment in technology and sustainable, interactive design has earned the University of Colorado at Boulder the honor of being named FoodService Director’s Foodservice Operation of the Year for 2018.

CU Boulder was announced as the magazine’s first Foodservice Operation of the Year recipient on Monday night during FoodService Director’s annual MenuDirections conference in New Orleans. The university was chosen from FSD’s 12 Foodservice Operation of the Month honorees in 2017.

CU Boulder was highlighted for the innovation on display at its Village Center Dining and Community Commons, a dining hall that debuted in January 2017.

When planning the new eatery, the school’s dining team “did a lot of focus groups with our students looking to see what they were interested in and based it on research in our other dining halls, as well as to see what the students are liking,” Paul Houle, director of campus dining, told FSD last year. “We also wanted to make it a destination and not really replicate every single thing on campus.”

FoodService Director previously honored an annual Foodservice Director of the Year, an award that was this year changed to better reflect the efforts of an entire foodservice operation.
