With World Food Day (Oct. 16) behind us and National Food Day (Oct. 24) a few days away, events are being held worldwide to promote sustainable food and improved food policies. Here are what several colleges and universities are doing to commemorate the days.
The University of California campuses are celebrating the days through what the school describes as “reducing food waste and promoting healthy foods.” UC students are participating in the “UC Eats Real Food Day Pledge,” where they eat minimally processed and sustainably prepared foods. Their weeklong events also include cooking demonstrations, lectures and locally sourced meals served in the dining halls.
George Washington University’s annual Food Day program—a weeklong celebration from Oct. 19 through Oct. 24—is designed to educate students about nutrition and wellness. GWU kicked it off with a cooking celebration showcasing healthy, affordable and sustainable food, complete with cooking demonstrations. Throughout the rest of the week they’ll also host Apple Day and a pop-up produce market.
Yale University is celebrating the “Four Pillars of Food” during “Food Day,” to raise awareness about healthy and sustainable diets. Yale’s Center for Science in the Public Interest implemented the event—which takes place Saturday Oct. 24—and hopes it will help people eat healthier, and encourage people to move through dance.
On Friday, Oct. 23, the University of North Carolina-Wilmington will host Food Day Wilmington 2015. Events include a sustainable food fair, area restaurants and campus dining halls serving locally sourced food specials, and educational workshops, featuring topics on healthy eating habits and eating well on a budget.
