The last days of May have been filled with more examples of kindness from diners and operators alike. Here are five bright spots from the week. 

1. Bracelet donations 

The daughter of a foodservice worker at McAllen Independent School District in McAllen, Texas, has donated 190 bracelets to foodservice staff as a thank-you for continuing to feed students during the pandemic.

2.  Grab-and-go for seniors 

When English Meadows Senior Living, which has several locations throughout Virginia, was struggling to obtain to-go containers for its new grab-and-go meal service, the dining team at Virginia Tech helped out with a loan of 1,000 reusable to-go containers. English Meadows will be able to use the containers until the end of July, when they will be returned to the school.

3. Grad goodie bags 

School nutrition staff at Perry Local School District in Massillon, Ohio, worked with faculty to make sure that graduating seniors got a proper send-off. The staff volunteered to deliver diplomas and handed out goodie bags to graduates before their virtual commencement.

4. Food for the needy 

The dining team at Averett University in Danville, Va., which is managed by Bon Appetit, donated 3,500 pounds of items to a local food pantry, where it will help out an estimated 100 families.

5. Thanks from the school board 

The school board at Union Area School District in New Castle, Pa., awarded 15 school cafeteria workers and bus drivers with gift cards and certificates in honor of all the work they have done to provide meals to students during COVID-19.
