Virginia Tech Dining Services plans to open more dining halls on the weekends beginning in October to help cope with a major increase in customers. The school added 1,200 meal plan holders to the 17,300 it had last school year, according to Dining Director Rick Johnson. The extra sales will help fund the expanded hours and additional labor needs.

Any other major relief to the crush may have to wait until 2012, when a new facility on the academic side of the Blacksburg campus is slated to open. It is expected to feature four in-house branded stations and four franchise operations. The department is also considering an expansion of its West End Market venue.
