Spartanburg Day Brings Dining Onsite
August 21, 2008
Spartanburg (SC) Day School has opened its 11,000-sq.ft. new dining commons, which is designed to serve as a hub for student interaction and will allow onsite food preparation for the first time, reports the Spartanburg Herald-Journal.
The $2 million facility has a dining area for the lower school (K-4) and a separate one for the middle (5-8) and upper school (9-12). It features meeting areas and space for student art. The new kitchen has modern equipment that allows the school's new executive chef, Edward Kaminski, and his 12-person staff prepare healthy, appealing meals for the school’s 475 students. The new dining commons replaces a 4,700-sq.ft. cafeteria built in 1965 that served meals brought in from an off-site commissary by a contracted food service provider.
The dining commons is part of a larger $20 million renovation campaign launched three years ago. A new 30,000-square-foot upper school is expected to open in fall 2010. Spartanburg Day is an independent co-ed college preparatory, day school founded in 1957.
