Sonny Perdue confirmed as USDA chief
The former Georgia governor is greeted with a stalled child nutrition reauthorization bill.
While child nutrition reauthorization is still on hold, there’s at least a little bit of good news—Sonny Perdue, the former governor of Georgia has been confirmed as the secretary of the USDA.
Much like his selection, Perdue’s confirmation Monday was rather quiet when compared to other secretary nominations put forth by President Donald Trump. Perdue was confirmed with 87 votes for and 11 against.
While many have focused on Perdue’s attitude toward trade, given the economic help that provides to many farmers, child nutrition professionals have been looking for clues as to how he will address the National School Lunch and Breakfast programs, which are still up for reauthorization.
While we still have relatively little to go on regarding Perdue’s feelings toward school meal programs, perhaps the fact that the USDA now has a leader will provide comfort to some.
Earlier this month at the School Nutrition Association’s Legislative Action Conference, a USDA representative addressed the crowd and asked for patience, saying, “We’re an agency in flux—no secretary, no undersecretary. We simply don’t have our policy officials to talk to us about our policies [moving forward].”
Let’s hope this is a first step toward a child nutrition reauthorization bill.
