San Francisco USD plans to end a la carte options in its school cafeterias this fall in order to funnel more students to choose reimbursable meals, reports the San Francisco Examiner. The goal is to get more students who qualify for federal meal reimbursement to choose the school lunch meals rather than buying less healthful options from the a la carte lines. It would also eliminate the distinction between more affluent students who can afford to patronize a la carte lines regularly, and students who are relegated to the reimbursable line. The district piloted the elimination of a la carte lines at three sites last school year, resulting in higher school lunch participation.
