Navy Names Ney Award Winners for Best Foodservice

A galley at Naval Base Ventura County has been named the Navy’s best shore galley, selected by the Navy secretary as the winner of the 2011 Captain Edward F. Ney Memorial Food Service Award for ashore general messes in the continental U.S, reports the Navy Times. The runner-up was the Admiral Nimitz dining facility at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, WA.

The top Ney award for overseas galleys went to Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, with the runner-up going to the Silver Dolphin Bistro galley at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii.

Other 2011 Ney winners include:

Submarines: Ballistic missile submarine Maryland (Gold), first place. Runner-up: Attack submarine Olympia; Honorable mention: Attack submarine Providence.

Afloat (small): Frigate Doyle, first place. Runner-up: Frigate Vandergrift.

Afloat (medium): Cruiser Leyte Gulf, first place. Runner-up: Dock landing ship Pearl Harbor. Honorable mention: Destroyer Chafee.

Afloat (Large): Command ship Blue Ridge, first place. Runner-up: Amphibious assault ship Wasp.

Aircraft carriers: Nimitz, first place. Runner-up: Harry S. Truman.

Winners of this year’s Ney awards will receive their trophies and recognition at an April 2 ceremony during an international food service conference in Schaumburg, IL.
