McGill to Combine Campus Dining Units
December 2, 2008
McGill University in Montreal will integrate its two separate campus dining operations beginning next year. The university had traditionally had distinct residential dining and retail dining operations. Residences Food Services operates three residential dining halls and some small snack bars while McGill Food & Dining Services operates retail outlets across the campus. Both also have catering arms that compete for campus business.
The arrangement has been long criticized as inefficient. A new dining services director position, which is yet to be filled, will oversee all campus dining operations under the new structure. One of the issues to be sorted out is labor, as Residences Food Services is unionized while McGill Food & Dining is not.
