Lunch Super Hero Inspiration Takes Program to Houston ISD

Kenny Thompson, the driving force behind the Lunch Super Hero Fund to help students behind on their lunch accounts in the Cypress-Fairbanks (TX) ISD, is now taking his program to Houston ISD, reports the Houston Chronicle. Founder of Feed the Future Forward, Thompson has been concerned about children who do not get full school meals due to delinquent lunch accounts and had worked with Cypress-Fairbanks ISD to establish the Lunch Super Hero program, which is funded by donations from individuals, businesses and organizations and discharges accounts that have exceeded the charge limit.

Houston ISD is almost twice the size of Cypress-Fairbanks in terms of enrollment, with more than 200,000 students, though its significantly higher free/reduced percentage (80% vs. around 50% for Cypress-Fairbanks) lowers the number of cash students potentially getting into trouble with overdrawn lunch accounts. Houston is the country's seventh largest school district while Cypress-Fairbanks, located in the Houston suburbs, is 22nd, according to the 2013 FM K-12 Power Players listing.
