LAUSD Students Reportedly Dump 10% of Meals in the Trash

Students in the Los Angeles USD dump an estimated $18 million in food into the trash each year, according to an estimate from District FSD David Binkle reported by the Los Angeles Times. The waste, which amounts to about $100,000 a day and represents at least a tenth of the food served, is blamed at least in part on federal regulations that require the serving of items, especially fruits and vegetables, whether a students wants them or not. The School Nutrition Association is lobbying Congress to relax some of the mandates in order to give directors more discretion in what they serve.
