Dartmouth College has received a $12 million gift from its Class of 1953 to modernize Thayer Hall, the main dining facility on campus. The building, constructed in 1937, was last renovated in 1976. The renovation, which will commence this summer and be completed in fall 2011, is expected to lower building energy use by a third as well as add an additional 300 dining room seats and significantly upgrade the quality of the dining service. The Class of 1953 originally committed $10 million to help fund a brand new dining and social facility, but the school developed an alternative, less expensive proposal that would achieve the same goal while also giving Thayer a much needed overhaul.
