Chartwells to Operate Historic Diner in Salem

Salem State University Dining Services Provider Chartwells will operate the reopened historic Salem Diner under the ownership of the Salem State University Assistance Corporation, which purchased it last summer, reports the Salem Gazette. Located in its original location in South Salem right next to the Salem State campus, the eatery is one of last Streamliner diners made by the Sterling Co. before it closed down. Originally opened in 1941, the Salem Diner is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Chartwell's menu at the Salem Diner is heavy on traditional diner food with a variety of breakfast-oriented selections such as omelets, breakfast plates and griddle items along with dinner plates, hot and cold sandwiches and soups/chowders. There's also a long list of daily specials including traditional fare like salisbury steak, meatloaf, stuffed cabbage and chicken or lamb pie.
