Brown University will begin accepting payment with standard commercial credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express) at four campus dining venues, reports the Brown Daily Herald. The addition of the payment option at the school's Blue Room, Ivy Rom, Campus Market and Poppy's retail outlets is designed to make them more appealing and convenient for staff and visitors as well as students who don't have meal plans.

The move does not entail a significant investment in hardware or software, according to administrators as it only requires the addition of a small card reader unit at each register and a new add-on software module to the existing server, neither of which are particularly expensive.
