ASU Reopens Memorial Union
August 26, 2008
Arizona State University has reopened its repaired and refurbished Memorial Union 10 months after fire nearly destroyed the structure, reports the East Valley Tribune. The $40-million project included not only a new fire alarm and detection system and sprinklers, a new stairway and some widened exits, but also features to make the building more sustainable. They include “ecosensors” that control the lights in every room based on how much natural light is present as well as the Engrained café on the second floor, which will not only use locally sourced ingredients but will have tables and chairs made from recycled aluminum and glass, bamboo wall covers and even wheat grass on the lunch counter, according to the Tribune.
