Students in the Manatee County (Fla.) Public Schools used fruits and vegetables to create animal artworks as a way of familiarizing themselves with the products served in district cafeterias, reports the Bradenton Herald. The fifth annual Play With Your Fruits and Vegetables Contest, run by the district's Food & Nutrition Services Dept., is open to all Manatee elementary schools and uses produce purchased specially for the event. The rules require that the artwork picturing anything from a dog to a duck be constructed exclusively out of edible objects. The finished creations are then displayed in school cafeterias where students vote for the best.
