San Francisco schools’ student-centered cafeterias

Sixty-five percent of student in San Francisco Unified School District qualify for free or reduced meals. But only 60 percent of those students were participating in the school lunch program. So the district partnered with IDEO, a design firm that takes a human-centered approach to its creations to help boost participation and satisfaction. From family-style service and creating different spaces within the dining room, IDEO created dining concepts that are tailored to the changing demands of students as they age. The first redesigned cafeteria opened in October, with expansion plans coming soon.
