Beginning with that quote from Roy Black,ASHFSA guest speaker Terrence Moore, president and CEO of MidMichigan Health, offered attendees a top management perspective on how they might maximize their own leadership performance. Here are some of his top tips, drawn from aphorisms and careers of dozens of executives, philosophers and others:

Never have lunch alone. "Relationships are built one at a time, and require consistent attention over time," Moore emphasized."You need to endear yourself to others before they will endear themselves to you."

Make the most of the ride. "A career is like a train ride that drops you off at the same place you got on.All you have to show for it is what you learned along the way."

Give your leadership away. "Much of your effectiveness can be measured by what you give away each day: praise, authority, credit, time and enthusiasm. People want leaders who give them direction and meaning, trust, a sense of hope and optimism, and results."

Remember that leaders are learners. "Learning is a life-long process and a key strategy for overcoming your own weaknesses.When hiring others, hire those with a 'teachable spirit.' Leaders create more leaders."

Listen. "Attention is the currency of leadership. When talking, ask more questions instead of making statements.Verbally probe your superiors, associates and others.They usually will not tell you exactly how they feel unless you probe."
