Hormel Foods Corp. has restructured the management of many of its operations, including foodservice. Gary Ray, formerly executive vice president of refrigerated products, has been named president of Hormel protein businesses, including Hormel refrigerated products, Jennie O Turkey Store and Farmer John.

Steven Binder, formerly group vice president of foodservice, has been named group vice president of Hormel refrigerated products while Vice President of Foodservice Thomas Day was promoted to senior vice president of foodservice, with responsibility for all Hormel foodservice sales and marketing functions. Deanna Brady, foodservice regional sales manager west, was named vice president of foodservice sales and she will oversee all of Hormel's foodservice sales force and report to Day.

HIGHS AND LOWS. Health & Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt (l.), Food & Drug Administration head Andrew von Eschenbach (r.) and FDA Associate Commissioner for Regulatory Affairs Margaret Glavin discuss Phillips Seafood canned crab products with the company's global quality control manager, Bobby Love. The feds visited Phillips' headquarters in Baltimore in August to examine quality standards for products sourced overseas (where Phillips gets almost all of its crab meat).

Mark Sneed

Steve Phillips

It's been a summer of highs and lows for Phillips. It saw the death of President Mark Sneed, 50 (inset, l.), from a sudden heart attack in July. Sneed had led Phillips since 1998, overseeing its growth from $5 million to $160 million in annual sales. CEO Steve Phillips (inset above r.) was selected to succeed Sneed. The company also named Dean Flowers EVP/CFO, Tom Heine SVP-foodservice, retail and club stores and John Knorr SVP-national accounts, restaurant and franchise operations.
