Switch up your classic barbecue sauce with this flavorful recipe.

Ingredients

3 dried ancho chilies, stemmed, seeded
2 cups apple cider
1 tbsp. olive oil
2 cups diced onions
¼ cup finely chopped garlic
1 cup tomato sauce
½ cup Worcestershire sauce
⅓ cup packed brown sugar
¼ cup apple cider vinegar
¼ cup lemon juice
1 ½ tbsp. mustard
3 tsp. salt

Steps

  1. Combine cleaned chilies and apple cider in sauce pan. Bring to simmer and let sit for 45 minutes off of heat.

  2. In separate sauce pan, heat oil, garlic and onion. Add tomato sauce and ancho chilies (without liquid). Sauté for 2 to 3 minutes. Add remaining ingredients and simmer on low for 30 minutes.

  3. Remove mixture from heat and allow to cool. Place in blender, or food processor, and purée (using apple cider to adjust texture, if necessary). Serve immediately, or cool and store. Reheat before serving.
