University removes nutrition labels from dining hall

The labels were causing congestion in the serving lines, school officials say.

The University of Montana in Missoula, Mont., last month removed nutrition labels from its all-you-care-to-eat dining hall, stating that the labels caused congestion in the serving lines as students slowed down to read them, the Montana Kaimin reports.

The labels also led students to avoid particular menu items considered healthy by the university, such as chicken strips, because they contained ingredients with a negative perception, school officials said.

According to UM Dining, menu items containing eight common allergens are still labeled as such. Students are also able to find more detailed nutrition information on the school’s website.
