Rutgers University Dining Services is making reusable black canvas bags available for students who get take-out food in order to reduce the more than 1.5 million disposable plastic bags it had used last year, reports the Daily Targum student paper. The department began the program by giving the bags away but has now begun charging a dollar for them. The effort is part of a sustainability initiative to reduce the amount of disposables going into the waste stream.
