During the week before school starts at the University of Mary Washington (UMW) in Fredericksburg, Va., the more than 700 new students are treated to a host of special events, culminating in a huge Ice Cream Social held on the lawn of the president’s home. The President’s Ice Cream Social for new students started about 10 years ago as a one-time “let’s be outrageous” event, but it was so popular the university made it one of their must-have annual events for their New Student Orientations.
